Volcano Science Experiments
When it comes to kids and science fair projects, the classic “Erupting Volcano” wins hands down. There just something magical about mixing vinegar and baking soda to create a foaming bed of lava. However, if you’re looking for more than just the typical vinegar-baking soda recipe, check out the video clip below… and don’t miss the final eruption! What is the last ingredient you added to make the foam in the beaker. I got hydrogen peroxide and soap but can’t determine the third ingredient. This type of volcanic explosion is just what I want for my science experiment.

The catalyst in the beaker is a solution of sodium iodide. It’s important that you understand that this reaction is very exothermic and the 30% hydrogen peroxide can be very dangerous to handle. You must have goggles on and all safety measures in place.
Where can I find the catalyst and how much does it cost? thanks
Because of the chemicals needed for the experiment, you’ll need to contact Flinn Scientific at (800) 452-1261. You have to be a middle or high school science teacher to buy from them – that’s their policy. There’s not a better chemical supply company for teachers in the world.
