Product Description

New Concentrate Formula – Makes over 7 liters (2 gallons) at a fraction of the cost!

Pearl Swirl™ Fluid is the secret ingredient that gives some shampoos that pearly-white look or creates wave currents in some shake-up water toys. In scientific terms, Pearl Swirl is a rheoscopic fluid, but it’s a concentrate that makes over 7 liters (2 gallons)! When added to water (or other liquids), it allows you to see the movement or currents in the liquid. This pearly-white, water-based suspension is safe and non-toxic and excellent for teaching units on ocean currents, aerodynamics, turbulence, convection, and many other motion effects that are often difficult for students to visualize. Pearl Swirl is safe and fun to add to many liquids to create a pearly-white effect.

Recommended for children ages 4 and up.

What’s Included?

  • Pearl Swirl Concentrate – 4 oz (120 mL) bottle
    • Enough Pearl Swirl to make 2 gallons (7 liters) of rheoscopic fluid
  • Baby Soda Bottle with cap
    **Bottle cap color may vary**

How Does It Work?

You’ve undoubtedly seen Pearl Swirl in shampoos, lotions, cosmetics or even water toys. Pearl Swirl contains suspended microscopic particles that make it easy to visualize currents and the flow of a liquid.

What Does It Teach?

Demonstrate ocean currents, aerodynamics, turbulence, convection, erosion, and other movements of nature that are difficult to see. This pearly-white, water-based suspension can be colored with a few drops of food coloring to make it even more effective. Simulate oceanic and atmospheric patterns that will encourage your students to experiment. A science activity guide provides great ideas for demonstrations and science fairs.

Experiment:

  • Add 1 tablespoon of Pearl Swirl concentrate to a 1-liter soda bottle filled with water.
  • Add a few drops of food coloring to spice things up (blue makes an excellent ocean color)

More Ideas

  • Add to Slime
  • Add to String Slime

Frequently Asked Questions

It is non-toxic but doesn’t make a very good beverage.

It demonstrates different types of convection currents that are hard to see otherwise, such as ocean currents, aerodynamics, turbulence, and convection.

This little 4 oz bottle makes 2 gallons. That’s quite a punch!

    Question

    Michaela Flint

I want to make a kalliroscope with the rheoscopic fluid. I know the material will settle and need shaking over time, but will it ever completely lose the ability to show the currents, and will it stay pearlescent?

Pearl Swirl is a pearlescent white. You add a coloring agent to make it whatever color you want.

Unfortunately there is nothing you can add to it that will keep this from happening. Best thing is to shake the bottle vigorously to loosen up the material after it has sat too long.

  12. Question

    Janine L (verified owner)

Can it be added to paint and have the same effect as in water or does the paint diminish or cover up the pearl effect? And does it change when dry? (I can try it if you don’t know, I just didn’t want to waste any if you already knew especially if it doesn’t work as I kind of think will be the case 🙂 )

You can add Pearl Swirl to just about any liquid you could imagine, including paint. It will give the paint a beautiful pearlescent look to the color. It will stay that way, even when the paint dries.

If I want to pump it around, for instance in a computer watercooling system. Which kind of pump would you recommend. Because with mica powder, a normal pump would crush the particles. Making the effect go away mostly.

Thanks for the e-mail. Our Pearl Swirl Rheoscopic Concentrate is indeed for experimental purposes in a classroom or home setting. We do not advise using it in pumps of any sort. Please reach out to us if you have any additional questions. Joshua

Mandy, once you add the pearl swirl to a liquid it will mix and create a wavy effect. Over time, the concentrate will settle to the bottom, but a simple shake of the container will mix it up again. Enjoy the product.

Pearl Swirl is a rheoscopic fluid that allows you to visualize the currents and movements of water. Mica is one of the ingredients of the concentrate. The 120 ml concentrate bottle will create up to 7 liters of solution. Pearl Swirl is safe and fun to add to many liquids to create a pearly-white effect. You can also add a food coloring (blue or green) to the water to create an ocean effect.
