Magic Sand: More Science Than Meets the Eye
Magic Sand may look like ordinary sand, but just try to get it wet. Steve Spangler’s Magic Sand begins as normal-looking sand, but is then dyed and coated with a substance that repels all water. This coating will keep the sand dry, even after being dumped into a container full of water. Kids will have a blast building castles and other structures under the water, and their minds will be blown when they’re finished and the sand is still dry. That’s right, they can simply pour out the water and feel the sand for themselves. In addition to long-lasting memories, you can use Magic Sand to create fun science experiments again and again. This innovative sand comes in red, yellow and blue (note that colors may vary).
How Is There Sand That Never Gets Wet?
Magic Sand begins as normal, free-flowing sand before it is dyed and covered with a water-repelling polymer that keeps it dry. Ordinary sand cannot form a structure that holds its shape. Because of its water-repellent properties, however, when Magic Sand is poured into water, it retains its shape and can even be molded into underwater structures.
The Science of What Makes This Sand Magic
Are you looking for an interesting way to capture students’ attention? Teach them about the properties of water molecules and how hydrophobic materials work using Magic Sand. Students can experiment with Magic Sand and ordinary sand from the beach to observe the mechanics of water-repellent properties.
Create Endless Magic Sand Experiments
Steve Spangler’s Magic Sand is a hydrophobic polymer, which is why Magic Sand never gets wet. It can be used to build stable underwater sandcastles and even better, Magic Sand is a reusable science toy. When finished, simply pour the water off and let the sand dry. You can use it for science experiments again and again.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does it work?
It starts out as normal sand but is then dyed and covered with a water-repelling polymer that keeps it dry.
What colors does it come in?
The sand comes in red, yellow and blue. If you call and talk to a customer service representative about getting a specific color, we will try our best to satisfy your request but, unfortunately, we can’t guarantee what colors we have available.
Does it stain?
