How Does It Work?
Thanks to the laws of inertia and centripetal motion, a penny can flip up on its side and spin around the inside of a balloon. However, if you substitute one of our hex nuts for the penny, your balloon will start to scream. The unique shape of the hex nut vibrates the walls of the balloon to produce a wonderfully annoying sound.

When your young scientist puts the penny inside the balloon and spins it a bit, they’ll observe the power of centripetal force as the penny follows its circular path within the balloon. Things get more exciting when your student inserts a hex nut inside the balloon. Unlike the penny, the hex nut has sides that create friction and vibration that turn into sound waves within the balloon, creating a shrieking noise.
