Chemistry Kit – CHEM C1000 – 12 Days of Wonder

By Blog Editor Susan Wells

We have reached Day #10 in our 12 Days of Wonder. Today’s spotlight science toy is Chemistry Kit – CHEM C1000.

We only have two more days to go.

Steve Spangler Science is celebrating the 12 Days of Wonder and highlighting our top 12 science toys and kits that are perfect to put under the tree. As blog editor, social media coordinator and mom of two budding scientists, I will share my review of each product. Steve Spangler Science also found 12 respected, popular mom bloggers to each test and review one of our 12 science gifts. I will include a link to their blogs and their honest reviews of each gift idea at the bottom of this post. Today, Stacey from Tree, Root, and Twig shares her review. The kit is also the Deal of the Day.

My Review:

If you have a budding chemist in your home, this is the kit for you.

My dad was a chemist and I grew up around beakers, test tubes and chemicals in his home office. He had a pair of safety goggles in the front seat of his car and was always testing chemicals in flasks on his desk. Chemistry still scares me.

Chemistry can definitely be intimidating, but once you dive in, it is rewarding and fun.

Starting this kit may feel like climbing a mountain, but it takes you through one step at a time. You will reach the summit before you know it.

The kit comes with a detailed instruction book that should be read before you start. The book covers science safety, chemical lessons and safety warnings. It gives you a solid foundation before you begin setting up your chemistry lab. The colorful experiment manual will walk you through over 125 activities and lessons. I loved the pictures, side notes and descriptions alongside each experiment.

This kit is serious science. It contains chemicals and is not for children under 10. Adult supervision is required.

You will need to plan a trip to the store before starting your experiments. The kit comes with all of the chemicals and test tubes that you will need, however you will need to provide common kitchen items like foil, paper towels, jelly jars, vinegar, etc. A pair of safety goggles is also included, but you may also want to purchase a pair of rubber gloves to protect hands.

I recommend you start at the beginning of the book on experiment #1 and build from there. My daughter wanted to skip ahead to something that caught her eye halfway through the book, but each experiment and lesson builds on the next so it is important that you start at one and work through the book. Each experiment takes time and this is not a kit you will be able to do in a day. We did the first several experiments but this kit is something that will take many afternoons to get through all of the experiments. This kit is the perfect winter gift to keep the kids busy during the cold months ahead.

This is a great starter chemistry kit at a great price today for $59.49. If you’d like to start smaller, we also offer a CHEM500 Kit for $34.99. Or if you prefer to go bigger and more elaborate for the chemist in your home we also offer CHEM2000 for $159.99 and CHEM3000 for $249.99.
