Floating Potato Debate – Alice 105.9

Just got a call from Slacker and Steve at Alice 105.9 with this question… “Do potatoes float in water?” I’ll give you a second to think…

Potatoes sink in regular water, but they’ll float in salt water or sugar water. Here’s the experiment that thousands of science teachers do each year with their students about floating and sinking potatoes.

If you’re the kind of person who has to fill the sink with water and test it out for yourself, you might want to try these experiments with oranges, limes, lemons, Diet Coke and a few bowling balls.

This is all so confusing. Potatoes will float in salt water but not in regular water. With lemon vs lime, one will float and other sink but why since both are about the same. Again, confusing!
