What's included?

  • Rosin
  • Illustrated science activity guide

How does it work?

Get ready to make the Singing Rod sing! Collect a little rosin on your fingers. Grip the Singing Rod tightly at the midpoint and rub the Singing Rod between your thumb and first two fingers from its midpoint to the end. It may take a bit of practice, but you won't mistake the sound when you hear it! Move your stationary hand down the Singing Rod to the quarter point to make a higher pitch!

What does it teach?

Learn where sound comes from—alternating condensations and refractions of the air surrounding the Singing Rod. Students should be able to see the oscillation at the free ends of the Singing Rod, which produces a certain harmonic. This should easily lead into a discussion about nodes, anti-nodes, and transverse standing waves. It's all in the science of sound!

The secret to the singing rod is, you need to hold the aluminum rod in the middle with 3 fingers make sure your grip is tight. Then coat 3 fingers from your other hand really well and grip the aluminum rod and slide your fingers over and over until you hear a loud screaming pitch.
