Crack Open Geode and Bag

The equivalent of an earth-made treasure chest, Crack Open Geodes have a rough-and-tumble exterior, but inside they hold a beautiful treasure. Ranging from one to two inches in diameter, these stones were created through a quartz deposit surrounded by years of sedimentation and pressure. Put the seemingly normal rock inside the included bag, put on your safety glasses, and give it a wack with a hammer. Sometimes you need to get forceful to get your treasure! The results are gorgeous, colorful crystals inside of an aged and rugged exterior.

Now, with the Crack Open Geodes 3-Pack, you and two friends can open them together and compare! Who's got more quartz deposits? Recommended for children ages 8 and up.

Geodes Review by George Groh

The geodes were very difficult to open. One completely disintegrated trying to open it, one split in 4 pieces, on the last one I use a cold chisel and hammer to try to split it, this was the only way to try to get it to open and in 2 pieces. These geodes are completely solid all the way through; I was expecting a more open type of geode, that's why they are so difficult to open. (Posted on 5/10/13)

Some of them were pretty neat! Review by Debi

We got these as party favors for our sons 13th birthday at the Discovery Center. The kids were super excited to crack them open, but unfortunately, some of them didn't have any crystals inside, which upset a couple of the children quite a bit. The other kids, who did get crystals, shared their crystals with the ones who didn't, so all ended well. (Posted on 4/24/13)

Fun in a Bag Review by Chris Bartal

We crack open geodes with our volcano unit, and the kids love them. Every child thinks he or she has found the most valuable treasure and fantasizes about the geode's potential value. You can have several kids share a geode if cost is a factor. (Posted on 3/24/13)

  • Is it hard to crack open?
The geode takes a little effort to crack open.  It has a treasure inside of it and isn’t going to give it up that easily!
  • How large is it?
Every rock is a little different but they all have an outside diameter anywhere between 1 to 2 inches (2.5 to 5 cm).
