How to Make Your Own Vuvuzela Sound and Annoy Everyone in Less Than 30 Seconds

The sound might be new to you, but it’s just background noise to the fans who enjoy World Cup soccer. The vuvuzela is a stadium horn that comes from South Africa. Fans blow the horn during soccer (football) matches to cheer on their team. I have to admit, the word vuvuzela wasn’t even in my vocabulary a few weeks ago, and now all the kids on our soccer team are talking about it. By itself, the sound from a single vuvuzela almost sounds like a trumpet, but the sound we hear on television is more like an annoying buzz or a swarm of angry bees. There’s even a Vuvuzela iPhone App to recreate the sound.

However, any science teacher who has ever done the Screaming Balloon Activity notices the similarity immediately. Find a few balloons and some hex nuts and you can make your own vuvuzela sound or check out the video below. We know… it’s not a real vuvuzela… but the sound is similar on a small-scale and the result is the same – totally annoying!
