Mr. Luna’s Bright Idea Follow-up

Kenny Luna has been very busy getting people excited about his bright idea. Mr. Luna is an 8th grade science teacher in North Babylon, New York, who wants Oprah to help him give every child in America (PreK-12), just one Compact Fluorescent(CFL) bulb to take home and plug into their favorite lamp. You’ve seen these bulbs at the hardware store”¦ those curly fluorescent bulbs that twist into a normal lamp socket. Bottom line – this action could save at least $2.3 billion in electricity costs.

Ken’s idea is spreading like a virus. I recently recorded a podcast with Ken so you can hear in his own words why he’s so passionate about his bright idea.

I have been trying to convert to florescent bulbs for awhile. I have tried many different manufacturers and have yet to come up with a similar “light output” as an incadescent bulb. So as a result I don’t use florescents in our reading lights, but I do use them in hallways, laundry rooms, garage, etc.

I recall reading somewhere that florescent bulbs are only energy saving if you leave them off for more than an hour at a time due to the large amount of energy needed to turn them on, though I might be mistaken. So don’t just turn them off, keep them off until you absolutely need them.

Unfortunately, the old bulbs are what you’re rembering, Joseph. The new light bulbs are extremely efficient, and do not produce the flickering start-up you recall from the older bulbs. If you check the rated Lumens (light output) on the packaging, you’ll find a whole range of bulbs available. These are for soft lighting in bedrooms, bright task lighting, candelabra bulbs for chandeliers, and even outdoor lighting.
These bulbs are extremely efficient, and they work! When my roommate moved into our apartment, I noticed he had a 60-watt incandescent bulb. I gave him a compact florescent which is BRIGHTER and uses LESS energy! It does not flicker when it is turned on, and that particular bulb was purchased two YEARS ago; two moves later it’s still working great!
I invite everyone who reads this to check out the RealGoods catalogue page with the Compact Florescent lights on it: http://tinyurl.com/fu7xt. This is just one retailer of many, though I picked RealGoods because of their entire product line…they’ve got plenty of alternative appliances too!
The Bright Idea project sounds great! Keep up the great work everyone!
