So, your child has been assigned a Science Fair project… now what do you do? Don’t worry we’ve got all your Science Fair needs covered! Here are some tips to help parents survive Science Fair season.

  • Children, especially younger ones, learn science best and understand scientific ideas better if they can experiment and explore items in "their world". Bubbles in the bathtub. Sugar in their drink. Things they connect with in their daily life.
  • Help your child choose a topic that will engage them by helping them determine which aspects of science interest them the most. For example, does your child have a special interest in animals? Then help them find a science fair experiment that explores the world of Life Science or Environmental Science.
  • “Wondering” is an important part of any science lesson. Children get excited about science because science provides them with answers to their wonderment. Make sure your child’s experiment causes them to wonder and explore the world around them.
  • Talk with your child’s teacher for ideas to help encourage your child’s science fair pursuits.
  • Remember that teachers usually assign science fair projects a few months before they are due, so encourage your child to start early and not wait until the last minute. If your child starts their project early enough it will allow enough time for quality research and any bumps in the road that may occur!
  • If you are excited about your child’s project they will be excited too! Encourage them to explore and learn. Always encourage your child in all their educational pursuits!
  • Science Fair GirlMost Science Fair Projects are measured for success based on the following:
    • Creativity of Question
    • Effectiveness of Experiment to prove/disprove hypothesis
    • Clarity of Presentation
    • Depth of Research
    • Appropriate use of Scientific Method
