My son who was 10 when he recieved this product was fascinated for e few days but quickly lost interest. I was also a little messy. However, I think this is a great gift for kids that like to build and explore,

As a chemical engineer, I LOVE this product! Everyone can imagine that chemical engineering involves an understanding of chemistry but did you know that the other half was glorified plumbing? With this set, kids can get a sense of what goes on in the engineering side of chemical engineering. I like that most of the parts are clear plastic so that you can see what is going on inside - it makes things very intuitive. The directions do a good job explaining the function of parts as well. My kids are young so we just put together one or two components at a time. The kit is surprisingly sturdy. Be warned, the directions to build each "factory" are sufficient but will require some trial and error if you don't come from an engineering background. Don't worry, trial and error is a very VALID way to learn. We do it all the time in industry - with safety precautions- we call these trial and error set-ups, "pilot plants". My only wish would be for some large clear valves, instead of opaque green, and a simple mechanical explanation of the mechanical pump.
