Science has created cars that run on grease, robots that are powered by the sun, and now… monster trucks that run on salt water! The Salt Water Monster Truck uses a special fuel cell, powered by salt water, to allow the vehicle a running time of almost 15 minutes. When your monster truck dies, just switch out the salt water! You'll see the engine of the Salt Water Monster Truck chugging away and can even switch the engine to either a "V" or "flat" format.

And don't let your terrain be limited to hardwood floors and carpets... go off-roading! The Salt Water Monster Truck features four-wheel drive to make sure as much power as possible is transferred onto the ground. In addition to the truck's 4WD, the body of the monster truck will twist to tackle the really rough terrain. Still having trouble? Adjust the ride height of your monster truck! You won't just build and watch the Salt Water Monster Truck go… you'll actually be making changes to make it work at its best.

How does it work?

The Salt Water Monster Truck uses an electrochemical cell for its power source. In this cell, you have anodes, cathodes, and electrolytes that convert chemical energy into electrical energy. With the fuel cell in this kit, you have magnesium (anode), a porous carbon sheet (cathode), and salt water (electrolyte). During the chemical reaction, the magnesium loses electrons to the chlorine in the table salt. This process causes hydrogen ions to be formed and to travel from the magnesium to the carbon sheet. This creates an electrical current that powers the monster truck.

What does it teach?

The Salt Water Monster Truck offers a great hands-on experience for young scientists to learn about alternative fuel. The ability for kids to modify the monster truck in order to conquer obstacles also allows unique problem solving opportunities.
