It took us two years of testing, but we found the world's best growing alligators! Then, we tweaked the polymer formula and made these growing gators even better. These little buggers are so good that we even supply them to other science companies.

The gator starts out only 11 centimeters long (4.5 in). Place the creature in water and watch it grow to an amazing size of almost 41 cm (16 in) long. Recommended for children ages 4 and up.

See the Growing Alligator Science Project to learn how to use this simple science toy to create a great science fair project.

What's included?

  • Large Growing Alligators in your choice of quantity

How does it work?

Growing creatures are made out of a superabsorbent polymer that soaks up water. The polymer is similar to the non-toxic chemical used in baby diapers. Don't overlook the educational value of these inexpensive toys.

What does it teach?

Discover how thirsty polymers perform very important functions in everyday life. They're used in everything from baby diapers to environmental cleanup materials! Aside from their environmental and industrial uses, discover how different kinds of polymers help these "growing toys" keep their shape as they expand.

Product FAQ

  • How big do they get?
They grow to an amazing 40 cm (16 in).  That’s about 4 times their original size!

  • How do they compare to your giant creatures?
These large growing gators don't start out as large as the ginormous creatures, so they don't grow quite as large either.

We were very pleased with the alligators. We gave them to our son to grow for our grandson and grand daughter. I will be sure to write another review after we get the chance to grow them.

Kids were amazed! Small are good, Large are great, Giant is AMAZING!

Last year, I ordered all three sizes of the growing alligators for my preK and K students. We were amazed with how much they grew! I had the giant crocodile for the class to predict, observe and measure. The kids loved it. We were all amazed with how large it got. I ordered the small alligators and had each child 'adopt' one. We named them, put them into small plastic tubs of water to grow for a couple of days, traced them and measured them using grid paper. The kids were wowed by the difference in the little ones, too. They grew from about 2 inches to 5 inches long. However, the large growing alligators were even more impressive. They grew from about 3.5 inches to 12 inches in two days! This year, I ordered the large ones for my classes. But now I'm not sure where I'll store the 25 larger containers while the alligators grow! I also like the larger ones because when they dried out, they still looked cute. I was able to reuse the large size. The small ones shriveled up when they were dry and then got slimy gross when we tried to re-grow them...so they seem more like a one-time use grow toy. I just tried out a large alligator that I used (and then dried) last year. He worked great. I am happy that I've purchased the set of 30 large growing alligators this year for my students. Fun measuring activity!

Absolutely Wonderful!

I purchased alligators along with the snake, the frog and the lizard for our church camp last year (June 2010). The kids in my class had a wonderful time watching them grow and measuring them daily. After camp, I let them dry out (about 2 weeks)and put them away to use this year. They are definitely reusable and I plan use them in my class again this year!

Growing alligator is a disappointment

It grows slowly and then falls apart. It decomposes and pieces continually fall off of it. We only tried one. Then threw it away. The other one will be played with but not in the water. We won't even try the other "growing" creatures we bought, as we don't want them to fall apart.

Tom-
We're sorry that your first attempt was a bad experience. The problems you are describing sound like you tried to grow the gator in hot water. Hot water causes the polymer to break apart as it expands. If that is not the case, please contact our customer service department and we will issue you a replacement.
