Petri Dish - 51 mm (2 in) - 20 pack
Used by biologists to culture bacteria and other microbes, these plastic petri dishes provide the perfect home for "growing" your latest science experiment. Nurture a new bacteria for this year's science fair project, and follow in the steps of Dr. Alexander Fleming when he discovered Penicillin in 1929! Recommended for children ages 6 and up.
What's included?
- 20 Pack of Petri Dishes that are 51 mm (2") in diameter
- Color Changing Milk activity guide
How does it work?
Partially fill your petri dishes with a perfect mixture of nutrients that provide food for microbe growth. Scientists often use hot agar mixed with salts, amino acids and other substances perfect for supporting the particular microbes they wish to study. When the mixture cools, place your tiny cells on top of the surface and watch them multiply. Don’t worry, they take some time to grow!Product FAQ
- Are they sterile?
They are not sterile. However, it is easy to make them sterile, just throw them in your dishwasher.

Work great for all sorts of things- get creative!
Ann - January 9, 2012
We use these petri dishes for all sorts of things. The kids I interact with are generally too young for exploration of bacteria however I have used these for lots of other things. For instance, just a little bit of hot glue, electrical or masking tape can make these into sample boxes for fragile or messy science table specimens - like butterfly wings, insects, nuts, seeds, different sands, gravel, clay, etc. I have also filled them with different amounts of small styrofoam pellets to represent solids, liquids and gas. The kids love to shake them to see the "molecular" movement or lack thereof. I have also filled them with sand and iron filings for a magnet activity. You can also use one half for a boat in buoyancy explorations. The size is perfect! |
