How Does It Work?

This is the second year we go to Steve Spangler website for my son's science projects. Last year the polymer cubes and marbles where a hit and we learned so much from polymers. This year we decided to learn even more about polymers and we got the clean up oil spill kit. My son, 9 years old loved this project and we truly learned so much from it.

It a great Ideam, My 5th grader used it in her science project, about oil spills. She took 2nd place in her science fair at school. Had 4th and 5th grade students in groups of 3 do this demo. They liked how the oil separated, but did smell it quite a bit. We had the students add the pre-measured polymer (1:1 ratio) from a baggie, then scoop it into a plastic bowl with a spoon. The patty hardened (got rubbery) with time, and the kids really liked it. We used 2 TBSP per group, and got about 17-18 demos out of the kit. The only reason for 4 starts instead of 5 is that it is messy with oil and the polymer flakes. (Posted on 5/31/13)
