Instant Snow Day – 12 Days of Wonder

By Blog Editor Susan Wells

We have reached Day #3 in our 12 Days of Wonder in our quick ascent towards the holidays. Today’s spotlight science toy is Instant Snow Day.
Steve Spangler Science is celebrating the 12 Days of Wonder and highlighting our top 12 science toys and kits that are perfect to put under the tree. As blog editor, social media coordinator and mom of two budding scientists, I will share my review of each product. Steve Spangler Science also found 12 respected, popular mom bloggers to each test and review one of our 12 science gifts. I will include a link to their blogs and their honest reviews of each gift idea at the bottom of this post. Today, Jackie from Monkey Mayhem shares her review. The kit is also the Deal of the Day. So check our blog every day for the next few weeks to learn all about our 12 Days of Wonder.

Day 3 of the 12 Days of Wonder features the Instant Snow Day.

My Review:

This is one of our most popular products and we are the home of the original Insta-Snow powder. There are many fake snow powders out there, but our fake snow is the real thing.

As I mentioned yesterday in my Shaker Slime Kit review, I have worked at Steve Spangler Science for many years. I’m confident in my slime mixing abilities and my snow making knowledge. I’ve brought Insta-Snow into my children’s classrooms during the holidays for several years, and it’s always a hit. Kids never tire of slime and they never ever tire of making snow in their hands.

Instant Snow starts out as a white powder (be careful if you mail this in an envelope to your friend via the U.S.P.S). Add water to the powder and it grows and fluffs into snow. It even feels cold and wet like the real thing. Born and raised in the Denver area, I have no understanding of people who have never seen snow. But if you or one of your friends or family live in an area that does not get snow, this is the perfect gift this holiday season. Send them an Instant Snow Day in a pail.

Even if you live in a colder region, Instant Snow is still a fun activity indoors.

I brought the Instant Snow Day pail into my daughter’s classroom. It comes with 375 grams of Instant Snow powder that will make about 6 gallons of snow. That’s a lot of snow.

I have learned that the plastic bin or bowl under the child’s hands is essential, especially if you don’t want to make a mess in your house or anger the school maintenance team.

I have each child cup their hands over a large plastic bin. I scoop a little bit of the powder into their hands and then pour a small cup of water on top. I love watching their eyes get big as the powder absorbs the water and begins to puff up. The powder turns into fluffy, cold snow right in front of them.

The snow gets dumped into the plastic bin and I soon have a crowd of children squeezing together to have their hands in the snow. Adults also fight the kids to get a touch of the snow.

You can also hydrate the snow for holiday decorations, cover a neighbor’s yard for a practical joke, or use it for a science fair project.

As always with Steve Spangler Science kits, the Instant Snow Day pail also contains an activity guide with suggestions for science fair projects, classroom demonstrations and experiments.

Disney Features Non-Melting Snow on Mickey Mouse Clubhouse

Insta-Snow-1My nephew can’t seem to get enough of the Disney Channel show Mickey Mouse Clubhouse.  And, when I heard that Mickey and his friends were going to be playing with the Professors “Non-Melting Snow”, I was more than a little interested.  I know all about Non-Melting Snow.  Our original Insta-Snow powder is an amazing polymer that puffs up when you add water and makes a pile of fake snow in seconds.  It’s the time of year when we can barely keep Insta-Snow on the shelves with requests for yard decorations, party decorations and the sad people in Florida that won’t have a white Christmas without a little help.  Likewise, as soon as my nephew saw his buddy Mickey Mouse playing in the non-melting snow, he wanted some for his own.  Lucky for me, I just happened to have a few hundred pounds on hand, so I’m still his favorite uncle.  If your kids are demanding some of Professor Von Drake’s non-melting snow… well, now you know where to go.  Just like Mickey, Insta-Snow won’t melt, so you can play in it anytime you want.  Trust me, you’ll be the coolest uncle/aunt/mom/dad, etc. your kids have ever seen.
